Our Island Art Walks will take you out among the island's sweetest resources. The history, wildlife, landscapes, music, and all the daily gifts that inspire us. This is the wonder, that keeps Peaks Island fresh and our art-making vibrant and alive.
How It All Started Artists seem to proliferate on the island, each generation producing a new crop. At different times, small cooperative galleries have opened and shut, but at the start of the 21st century, over 25 separate artist-households produced work in isolation. During 2002, one painter chose a day for an Open Studio event. She drew a rough map, signing as many friends as she could think of to join the "Art Walk" tour. The date was in August, the organization loose. But as island artists entered each other's studios, they found kinship, and so many surprises— A photographer who is also a painter; a gardener who is also a sculptor; a curator who solders; a fashion designer who paints; a mom who makes mosaics; a printmaker married to a painter. Clearly this 1-mile island "gem" offered more than its share of art-per-acre. With this kinship begun, the artists could no longer remain isolated. An ongoing monthly walk, complete with sponsors, printed maps, and now a year-round Web "community" of links has connected us. Please come on over and surprise yourself with each artist's unique blend of craft, concept, and media!
